Spencer Trappist
Spencer Trappist Monk’s Reserve 330ml
Monk’s Reserve Ale.
There are beers that are simply beverages, and then there are those that are a testament to history. Spencer Brewery, located at St. Joseph's Abbey in Massachusetts, was a place of quiet devotion—and for a time, a living piece of Trappist brewing tradition in the United States. It was the first and only American brewery to earn the coveted Authentic Trappist Product logo, and its closure in 2022 left a void that won't soon be filled. Its legacy now exists in the cherished memories of those who appreciated their beers and journey, in addition to helping bring them to life.
For me, the memory of Spencer Trappist Monk's Reserve Ale is deeply personal. I had the privilege of helping the monks bring this beer to market by providing tasting feedback on various batches over a period of time. It was a journey of careful tasting, a collaboration that was both humbling and exhilarating. To be a small part of this historic project was to feel connected to a centuries-old tradition, to taste the nuanced evolution of a beer that was different and distinct from its Belgian counterparts, but extremely appreciable. It was a true labor of love, honor, and extraordinary dedication.
This Trappist Quad was a beer of profound complexity and quiet power. Pouring a deep, inviting mahogany with a rich foam, it offered a complex bouquet of dark fruit, sweet caramel, and molasses, with a hint of warming spice. On the palate, it was an achievement in balance—velvety smooth and full-bodied, with flavors of dried figs, plums, and a subtle yeasty richness that so wonderfully held its own, despite the high ABV. The finish was long and elegant, leaving a lasting impression of the dedication and skill of the brothers who brewed the beer. Now, Monk's Reserve Ale is a distinct memory of a taste of history, a celebrated time and storied tradition when a Trappist Quad found a home in America.
